The University of Michigan Medical Center Alumni Society annually bestows awards on alumni/ae and students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their careers or their studies. Awards to alumni/ae are presented at the fall reunion. Awards to students are presented at the Senior Luncheon.

Each year in the fall nominations are invited for awards for the following year. The call for nominations appears in Medicine at Michigan as well as on this Web site. NOMINATIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED BY JANUARY 31, 2008.

Awards given include the following:

MCAS Distinguished Achievement Awards

The MCAS Distinguished Achievement Award is given to an outstanding individual in recognition of exemplary achievement in medicine, with the achievement in some way advancing medical education, medical research or patient care. The recipient may be recognized for distinguished achievement as a member of the faculty or staff of the University of Michigan Health System, as a member of the Medical Center Alumni Society, or as an alumnus of the University of Michigan Medical School with demonstrated career achievements that have advanced the missions of medical education, medical research or patient care anywhere in the world.

MCAS Distinguished Service Awards

The MCAS Distinguished Service Award is given to an outstanding individual in recognition of exemplary service demonstrated over many years toward advancing the missions of medical education, medical research or patient care. The recipient may have demonstrated exemplary service as a member of the faculty or staff of the University of Michigan Health System or as a member of the University of Michigan Medical Center Alumni Society. The recipient may also be an alumnus of the University of Michigan Medical School who has served with distinction advancing the missions of medical education, medical research or patient care anywhere in the world.

MCAS Early Distinguished Career Achievement Award

The MCAS Early Distinguished Career Achievement Award is given to an outstanding individual who has studied medicine at Michigan and is thus an alumnus of the Medical Center Alumni Society (M.D., resident, Ph.D. recipient or fellow) in recognition of exemplary achievement in medicine in the first 20 years of his or her medical career. The achievement may have advanced the missions of medical education, medical research or patient care anywhere in the world.

MCAS By-laws Related to Awards

  • MCAS Awards nominations are solicited by the chair of the MCAS Awards and Nominating Committee from the dean and faculty of the Medical School , the executive director of the University Hospitals and Health Centers , members of the MCAS board and the membership at large.
  • Letters of nomination are requested from those submitting nominations outlining the reasons for the nominations and the candidates' achievements. In addition, letters of nomination must specify whether or not the nominations may be carried forward for a year if the candidates are not selected that year.
  • MCAS Awards are granted by a majority vote of the MCAS Awards and Nominating Committee.
  • MCAS Awards may not be given to those currently serving on the MCAS board, to those currently serving as an officer or employee of the U-M Alumni Association, or to an individual who is a regent or officer of the University. Current faculty and staff of the University are usually not considered for an award; they may be considered under exceptional and merited circumstances.

Student Awards

The Alumni Society presents three student awards annually, one to a second-year student, one to a third-year student and one to a graduating student.

The MCAS Scholarship Service Awards are presented to one second-year and one third-year medical student. All students in their sophomore and junior years of Medical School at the University of Michigan are eligible for the awards. Award nominations must be submitted by January 31 of the student’s sophomore or junior year. The awards, which consist of a certificate of merit and $2,000, will be presented at the Senior Luncheon on May 8, 2008.

The MCAS Academic Achievement Award is presented to the graduating senior who has achieved the highest academic standing in his or her class. The award, which consists of a certificate of merit and $2,000, will be presented at the Senior Luncheon on May 8, 2008.

MCAS By-Laws Related to Student Awards

MCAS Student Awards:

Applicants shall be considered on the following basis:

  • service to the Medical School
  • service to the Health System
  • service to the University
  • service to the community at-large
  • scholarship, if otherwise similarly qualified students apply

Nomination for an MCAS Student Award may be made by:

  • the executive leadership of the Medical School
  • a faculty member of the Medical School
  • a member of the Alumni Society Board
  • the MCAS membership at-large
  • a fellow classmate
  • the student himself or herself

Each nominee must submit an application and two letters of recommendation. Application materials are distributed by the MCAS office. Completed applications and letter(s) of reference are collected by the MCAS office and distributed to members of the Awards and Nominating Committee.

MCAS Academic Achievement Award:

This award is presented, on the recommendation of the faculty of the Medical School, to the graduating senior who has achieved the highest academic standing in his or her class.

50 Years in Medicine Medallion

The Emeritus/Emerita Medallion recognizes University of Michigan Medical School graduates, residents and fellows who completed their medical education or training at the University of Michigan 50 or more years ago.

The medallion honors their many years of service to medicine and their myriad contributions to the University through their volunteer service and their gifts to support the University of Michigan Health System's missions, as one of America's leading academic health institutions, in teaching, research and clinical care.

Nomination Process

To nominate someone for a MCAS Distinguished Award, please complete ONE nomination form (PDF), attach TWO letters of recommendation and ONE curriculum vitae. Once the nomination is complete with the above mentioned requirements, send it to our office via postal mail. (See address below.) Nominations must be postmarked by January 31, 2008.
