Gary E. Friedlaender, M.D.
Gary E. Friedlaender (M.D. 1969, Residency 1971) is the Wayne O. Southwick Professor of Orthopaedics, professor of pathology, and chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in the Yale University School of Medicine.
Dr. Friedlaender earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Michigan and spent two years as a house officer in general surgery here. He joined the faculty of the Yale University School of Medicine in 1976, and has served as professor and chair of orthopaedics and rehabilitation since 1986.
Dr. Friedlaender has served as president of the American Association of Tissue Banks (1983-85), the American Council on Transplantation (1983-85), the Orthopaedic Research Society (1994-95), the Academic Orthopaedic Society (1995-96), the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons (2001-02), and in 2008 he was elected second president-elect of the American Orthopaedic Association. He also has chaired the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Council of Musculoskeletal Specialty Societies, Committee on Research, Committee on Academic Advocacy, Task Force on Tissue Banking, and has served as a member of the academy’s board of directors, along with numerous other committee appointments.
Dr. Friedlaender served or serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, Spine, Journal of Orthopaedic Research and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has written numerous scientific publications and received national awards, including the Delta Award of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Nicholas Andry Award of the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons.
