DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIPS, RESEARCH SUPPORT FOR RESIDENTS, AND POST-DOCTORAL AND POST-RESIDENCY FELLOWSHIPS

At no time in human history have the biological sciences offered so much potential for new, life-changing discoveries. New understandings related to the genome, to the role of proteins, to nanotechnology and to stem cells all beckon young medical scientists with the promise of extraordinary advances.

Scholarship and fellowship support to allow some of the brightest and most highly motivated future medical scientists at the University of Michigan to proceed at full speed with their earliest work can make a huge difference for them and can multiply their potential impact on the future of medical science many times over.

Such support can be provided through expendable gifts that can be spent immediately or through permanent named endowments, which provide annual distributions of about five percent of the corpus of the fund in perpetuity. The dollar amounts listed below are the minimum required in each category to establish a permanent named endowment.

Scholarship for Medical Student in the Medical Scientist Training Program
$250,000 or more

The Medical Scientist Training Program is part of a national program, partially supported by the National Institutes of Health. Leading U.S. medical schools, including the University of Michigan, participate in the program. The aim of the MSTP: to find and educate the brightest young minds in the nation who have an interest in medical science, to enable them to be both highly skilled clinicians and successful researchers. Students who successfully complete the MSTP are awarded both an M.D. and a Ph.D., signifying their achievements in both medicine and science. A scholarship to support a student in the Medical Scientist Training Program helps advance the ambitious work of these illustrious future scientists and clinicians in their rigorous and lengthy programs of study. A $250,000 endowment provides $12,500 in distributions the first year after its establishment.

Scholarship for Graduate Students in the Basic Sciences and Related Translational Research Programs
$250,000 or more

Graduate students working toward their doctorates in such fields as cell and developmental biology, microbiology and immunology, human genetics, physiology, pharmacology, biological chemistry and related translational research programs spend many years to earn their Ph.D.s. These students are contributing to major advances in genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, neurosciences, and biomedical engineering that will in the future translate into improved treatments for such diseases as Alzheimer’s Disease, heart disease and cancer. An endowed scholarship to support the work of one of these highly dedicated and creative individuals is a worthy investment in their future and in the promise of their research.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in the Basic Sciences
$250,000 or more

After receiving their doctorates, a great many medical scientists have further years of work and training ahead of them to achieve their scientific goals. Post-doctoral fellowships provide salary and research support for these young scientists working on the frontiers of medicine at a time in their lives when such support can make a crucial difference to their future success.

Resident Program in Clinical Research
$500,000 or more

An endowed one-year program for a resident makes it possible for him or her to spend an entire year doing research in a chosen specialty. A year dedicated to research, which will be in addition to the many years of clinical training in a specialty, is an unusually enriching experience, providing understandings that will be of great value to such an individual over the entire course of his or her long medical career.

Post-Residency Fellowship in Clinical Research
$1 million or more

An endowed post-residency fellowship provides support for an outstanding individual advancing toward a career in academic medicine in his or her chosen specialty. Such a fellowship includes a clinical research component, often a laboratory research component, and may include advanced clinical training as well. Helping to advance the career of someone dedicated to academic medicine ensures America’s continued leadership in medical science, provides the basis for improved health care, and ensures that the next generation of medical students and residents will receive the inspiration and teaching of superbly prepared teachers and mentors.
