The President’s Challenge

A Unique, Limited-Time Opportunity to Maximize the Impact of Your Scholarship Giving

Maintaining and enhancing the quality of our Medical School depends upon our ability to recruit the very best medical students, and to provide them with the finest training. Scholarship support from generous benefactors is playing an increasingly crucial role in making that possible.

To encourage additional support for graduate/professional scholarships — including Medical School scholarships — University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman recently committed $20 million to provide a 1-to-2 match for all new scholarship gifts made between September 1, 2007, and December 31, 2008 (or until matching funds are depleted).

The President’s Challenge provides a fantastic opportunity for benefactors to maximize the impact of their scholarship giving: Every two dollars pledged to student scholarships will be matched by one dollar from President Coleman. This means that, for a limited time, scholarship benefactors can enjoy the satisfaction of getting to know and helping to foster a talented and hard-working medical student (as well as other benefits, including naming opportunities), for much less than would normally be the case.

During the challenge, gifts of any amount will be eligible for the match. However, President’s Challenge matching funds would enable scholarship benefactors to have an opportunity to:

  • Provide a $5,000, 1-year Named Expendable Scholarship for only $3,333
  • Provide a $20,000, 4-year Named Expendable Scholarship for only $13,333
  • Provide a $100,000 Endowed Scholarship (providing $5,000 in student support annually) for only $66,667

Additional program details:

  • New pledges or gifts of $50,000 or more are eligible for establishing an endowed fund matched by the President’s Challenge.
  • Pledge payments made between September 1, 2007, and December 31, 2008, will be matched, subject to available matching funds
  • A corporate match for an employee’s gift can be used toward the minimum, provided the benefactor agrees to pay if the corporation does not.

We encourage you to consider taking advantage of this unique, limited-time opportunity to make the most of your scholarship giving, and to provide
a U-M Medical School student with the support they need to earn a medical degree from one of the world’s finest institutions of medical education.
