SCHOLARSHIP GIFTS

Scholarship support for students in the University of Michigan Medical School is more important than it has ever been in the entire history of the School. A variety of factors, including shorter hospital stays and more patients receiving their extended treatment outside the hospital setting (requiring much smaller faculty-to-student ratios in the outpatient setting) and evolving technologies (requiring large, ongoing capital expenditures) mean that medical education is more expensive than it has ever been before.

Medical students at Michigan today are graduating with better educations than ever before, but the cost of that education is causing them to begin their internships and residencies carrying debt loads often in excess of $100,000.

A scholarship gift is a wonderful way of extending a hand to these outstanding students and relieving some of the burden of their educational expenses. A scholarship gift provides a meaningful way to have your name, or that of another family member, friend or former teacher or mentor, associated in perpetuity with the University of Michigan Medical School.

Named Endowed Scholarship
$100,000 or more

A permanent endowment gift of $100,000 for scholarship support in the Medical School provides a student with about $5,000 in the first year of the gift's establishment. As the corpus of the fund grows over time, the distributions from the fund (about five percent as set by regental guidelines) increase as well. A permanent endowment of $500,000 or more provides enough in annual distributions to cover most of the annual costs of a student's education.

Named Annual Scholarship
$5,000 or more

A named annual scholarship carries your name or the name of someone else you choose to honor. You will have the opportunity to meet the student receiving your scholarship and to mentor him or her throughout the school year.

Named Four-Year Scholarship
$20,000 or more

Funding a named scholarship for four years in a row allows you to provide a student with the assurance of receiving at least $5,000 per year in scholarship support each year he or she is enrolled in the Medical School. As with the one-year scholarship gift, the student receiving support from you will know who you are and will establish a benefactor-student dialogue if you so desire.

Gifts to the Dean's Annual Scholarship Fund

Gifts of less than $5,000 go directly into the Dean's Annual Scholarship Fund and are awarded in full in the fall of each year to students on the basis of both merit and need.

Gifts to the Dean's Endowed Scholarship Fund

Gifts for scholarship endowment of any amount less than $100,000 go directly into the Dean's Endowed Scholarship Fund. Each year distributions from this permanent fund (about five percent, as set by regental guidelines) are distributed to students based on both merit and need.
