University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center
At the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center we bring the promise of vision to people every day. An ophthalmologist finds new treatments for a patient whose eyesight is failing. A pediatric specialist detects a child’s eye disorder while there is still time to correct it. A scientist discovers a gene that is key to understanding a previously untreatable eye disease.
But in a changing world with ever evolving technology, we must continue to reposition ourselves to meet the needs of our patients, our trainees, and our community.
Our strength for more than 130 years – a strong faculty providing patient care and education – is what will lead us into the future. But to meet fully the challenges we face, we must also foster our more recent legacy of cutting-edge research.
The Building for Better Vision campaign is about bringing together the facilities and funding required to carry out our mission – to improve the quality of life for all who deal with vision loss.
Bringing together the talents of our physicians and researchers with the promise of science and technology, we can make a difference in our patients’ lives and keep their worldsbright and beautiful.
We can make this difference by:
Building the Bridge from Laboratory to Clinic
Expanded research space will improve collaboration between physician and researcher, helping to translate laboratory findings to patient treatments
Assembling the Best
Faculty support will give Kellogg the resources needed to recruit and retain the best minds in vision research, strengthening our fight against eye diseases
Fulfilling the Promise of Research
Program and endowment support will give Kellogg researchers the resources needed to reinforce their investigations, broadening our understanding of vision and eye disease
Enhancing the Student and Resident Education
Enriching educational programs and resources will provide even greater training to those ready to take their knowledge to the world, offering care to communities around the globe
Expanding and Improving Patient Care
Larger and redesigned clinics will allow us to treat more patients, more quickly, giving them the best care possible
The opportunity to make a difference
When faculty members are asked why they became physicians or scientists they often respond, “To a make a difference in someone’s life.” Kellogg was created as a place where clinicians and researchers could come together and share their strengths to make a difference not just in one life, but also potentially in the lives of millions.
A well-equipped laboratory, the resources to pursue research, the clinics to treat patients, and the means to train the next generation of ophthalmologists and vision scientists – these are the basic building blocks of an academic ophthalmology department.
The extra measure of excellence, however, is private support. It makes the difference between a good department and an excellent center able to contribute to science and healing on an international scale. Philanthropy provides the spark, allowing a department and faculty to do more than they had dreamed possible.
The Building for Better Vision Campaign includes two main elements – capital and endowment/program support. Together they form the foundation of our vision for the future.
The planned expansion of our facilities has an estimated cost of $74 million. The UM Health System has committed $30 million toward that total, creating a philanthropic goal of $44 million. Already, many individuals and foundations have made generous gifts moving us closer to that goal. But there is more to be done.
The new facilities will include improved lab space, expanded educational areas, and more efficient patient clinics.
To maintain the momentum that has been building for the last decade we seek to increase our endowment and raise funds for program support. We have set a goal of $20 million to provide support for recruitment and retention of faculty, research funds for scientists, and new education programs for students.
With your help, we can build for better vision.
With your help, we can realize our vision for the future… today.
