Cyril M. Grum, M.D. (Residency 1983), and Robert W. Lash, M.D., class marshals
elected by the Class of 2003, led the Processional into Crisler Arena on
May 30 for commencement ceremonies for 156 new University of Michigan doctors
of medicine. Renovations to Hill Auditorium, the traditional venue for
Medical School graduation, continue on course toward completion in late
2003.
This year’s graduates had the opportunity to hear about the fundamental
importance and role of the ethical dimensions of medicine from Edmund D. Pellegrino,
M.D., the John Carroll Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics at Georgetown
University’s Center for Clinical Bioethics, in remarks entitled “Professing
Medicine: The Moral Imperatives.” Class speaker Eugene Greenstein posed
the ultimate question to his classmates in his address, “What Is It Really
About?”
Graduates and their families also celebrated the day before commencement at
the annual Senior Lunch held at the Ann Arbor Sheraton Inn and sponsored by
the Medical Center Alumni Society. In keeping with a tradition begun by the
class of 2000, Class President Joseph Taylor presented Dean Allen S. Lichter
(M.D. 1972) with a check representing the contribution of the school’s
newest alumni toward an endowment intended to one day help provide all students
of the Medical School with scholarships covering their tuition costs, a goal
shared by Dean Lichter.
In addition to graduating medical students, approximately 30 students received
Medical School Ph.D.s in separate ceremonies held April 25 by the Horace H.
Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
