Gilbert S. Omenn, M.D., Ph.D. — professor
of internal medicine and of human genetics in the U-M Medical School and a
professor in the U-M School of Public Health — is the president-elect of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). With nearly 10
million members, AAAS is the world's largest general scientific society and
the publisher of the prestigious journal Science.
Omenn's three-year term of office on the AAAS Board of Directors began at
the association's annual meeting in February. He will serve as the association's
president for one year, beginning in February 2005. In addition to leadership
responsibilities for the organization, the president serves as an international
spokesperson for issues related to scientific research and policy.
Omenn, who came to Michigan in 1997 when former U-M President Lee Bollinger
appointed him the university's executive vice president for medical affairs
and CEO of the U-M Health System, was formerly dean of the School of Public
Health and professor of medicine and environmental health at the University
of Washington in Seattle.
