Stefan S. Fajans (M.D. 1942, Residency 1949), professor emeritus of internal medicine, is an international leader in the study and treatment of diabetes mellitus. In 1977, Fajans organized the establishment of the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center and served as director of the center until 1986, a position Herman now holds.
David M. Stout, president of pharmaceutical operations at GlaxoSmithKline, was instrumental in helping to establish the Fajans/GlaxoSmithKline Professorship, which reflects the company’s longstanding commitment to diabetes research. Additional contributions came from many of Fajans’ patients, friends and colleagues, including a generous gift from Barry M. Sherman (M.D. 1966, Residency 1971) and his wife, Esther. Sherman studied with Fajans during his medical training at Michigan.
