Nazeela Sabir, Ashleen Kishore and Khanh Nguyen, students at Sacramento Valley High School in California, have won second place in the senior group exhibit category at the annual National History Day competition — and they’re thanking a group of U-M researchers known as Team Flu.
As we reported in the spring 2007 issue of Medicine at Michigan, Team Flu, led by U-M Medical School historians Howard Markel (M.D. 1986), Ph.D., and Alexandra Stern, Ph.D., was commissioned by the U.S. government to study the 1918-20 influenza pandemic, specifically the factors that reduced its impact in certain areas around the country. Along the way, the team compiled an archive of historical documents and materials related to the pandemic and posted it online. Sabir and her friends consulted with Team Flu and drew from the archive when constructing their project on the pandemic for National History Day.
“The Team Flu online archive was essential to our project,” Sabir says. “The theme of National History Day this year was ‘Triumph and Tragedy,’ and the archive allowed us to portray the triumph and tragedy of the pandemic in a well-balanced manner.”
