Scholarship Dinners a Success in 2006
The Medical School, in conjunction with the Medical Center Alumni Society (MCAS), routinely sponsors events designed to provide our alumni with a chance to reconnect with others in their local areas, as well as with the dean. In addition to dinner, guests have an opportunity to learn more about the latest Medical School developments, as well as about the ongoing need for additional scholarship funds to support our talented and hard-working medical students.
Our 2006 scholarship dinners were a big success, and we are grateful to several distinguished U-M Medical School alumni who helped make this success possible, including:
Richard L. Watnick (M.D. 1984, Residency 1988) and Kay E. Watnick (M.D. 1983), who hosted a dinner in Birmingham, Michigan, on May 3.
MCAS board member James C. Hays (M.D. 1977), who hosted a dinner in Roswell, Georgia, on June 3.
MCAS board member Steven L. Giannotta (M.D. 1972, Residency 1978) and Sharon Giannotta, who hosted a dinner in Pasadena, California, on August 12.

Depression Center Moves to New Rachel Upjohn Building
 |
Melvin McInnis, M.D., the Thomas B. and Nancy Upjohn Woodworth Professor of Bipolar Disorder and Depression, and professor of psychiatry, addresses guests at the U-M Depression Center’s grand opening gala dinner. |
In fall 2006, the University of Michigan Depression Center — a cross-disciplinary home for research and care aimed at helping people with depression, bipolar disorder and other psychiatric illnesses — moved to the new Rachel Upjohn Building on the U-M Health System east medical campus.
The U-M Depression Center was founded in 2001 as the first of its kind in the nation. Over time, many psychiatry and addiction specialists, as well as researchers from across the University, will move their programs to the building, where they will be better able to collaborate on research and conduct clinical trials. Additional information about the U-M Depression Center is available at www.depressioncenter.org.
