Medical School and MCAS Host Scholarship Dinners in Conjunction with University’s Michigan Difference Seminars

On February 6 and 8, the University of Michigan hosted seminars in Palm Beach and Naples, Florida, featuring presentations by distinguished faculty from throughout the University. Following each seminar, Interim Dean James O. Woolliscroft, M.D. (Residency 1980), along with the Medical Center Alumni Society (MCAS), hosted scholarship dinners designed to provide alumni with a chance to connect with others in their local areas, as well as with the dean. In addition to dinner, guests had an opportunity to learn more about the latest Medical School developments, as well as about the ongoing need for additional scholarship funds to support our talented and hard-working medical students.

During the dinners in Palm Beach and Naples, guests also enjoyed the opportunity to witness the awarding of the 50 Years in Medicine Medallion to several outstanding alumni, including Michael M. Gilbert (M.D. 1948), Ph.D.; Russell V. Howard (M.D. 1955); Richard W. Prior (M.D. 1951); Ethon L. Stone (M.D. 1939); and Seymour Taffet (M.D. 1943). The medallion recognizes graduates, residents and fellows who completed their medical education or training at the University of Michigan 50 or more years ago for their service to medicine and their contributions to the University through volunteer service and gifts supporting the U-M Health System.

U-M Cardiovascular Center: Building for Progress

The new U-M Cardiovascular Center (CVC) clinical building will soon open its doors to a new and better way of treating and studying cardiovascular disease by uniting many of the U-M’s people, services and programs dedicated to heart and vascular care.

A public grand opening event is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, at which U-M President Mary Sue Coleman, U-M Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Health System CEO Robert Kelch (M.D. 1967, Residency 1970), CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta (M.D. 1993), and VIPs from around the state and nation will gather for a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by public tours and entertainment. Ways of Giving: IRA Legislation Offers U-M Donors Golden Giving Opportunity

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 provides, for a limited time, the opportunity to make charitable contributions directly from Individual Retirement Accounts to qualified charitable organizations. Until December 31, 2007, you may take advantage of this unique opportunity to support the U-M Medical School scholarship program.

  • Individuals 70 ½ and older may transfer up to $100,000 directly from an IRA to a qualified charity;
  • Because a qualified charitable contribution generates neither taxable income nor an itemized tax deduction, even non-itemizers can benefit;
  • The charitable distribution may be applied toward your Required Minimum Distribution;
  • Even if you plan other charitable gifts that will fully utilize your allowable federal income tax charitable deduction (50 percent of your adjusted gross income for cash gifts to public charities), you can take advantage of this new legislation.

For more information, call B.J. Bess at (734) 998-6044 or visit the U-M Office of Planned Giving Web site.

MCAS Provides First Aid

On February 2, members of the Medical Center Alumni Society (MCAS) board handed out copies of First Aid for USMLE Step 1 to our second-year medical students during a recent student seminar. This is the third year MCAS has sponsored and distributed the study guide to second-year students. Thomas Varbedian (M.D. 1956), John Peirce (M.D. 1958) and Steven Newman (M.D. 1970) distributed the books this year on behalf of the MCAS board.
