Medical School Alumni and Friends Enjoy “Medicine That’s
Making the Michigan Difference” Seminar in Phoenix.
The U-M is
very fortunate to have some of the world’s most talented physicians
and scientists, and very proud to offer medical research, education
and patient care that is among the best available anywhere. To showcase
this wealth of talent and expertise, the U-M Health System recently
sponsored its first “Medicine That’s Making the Michigan
Difference” seminar in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 29.
Approximately
200 U-M Medical School alumni and friends attended the seminar, which
was held at the Ritz-Carlton Phoenix. Following welcoming remarks by
Medical School Interim Dean James O. Woolliscroft,
M.D., seminar participants
were treated to a pair of presentations by two of the Health System’s
most engaging researchers:
Diet and Dietary Supplements from A – Z:
What Works and What’s Worthless by Mark
A. Moyad, M.D., Phil
F. Jenkins Director of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for the
Michigan Urology Center, and senior research associate, Michigan Urology
Center
Cardiac Surgery: The Future Horizon by Richard
L. Prager, M.D.,
professor of surgery, chief of the Division of Adult Cardiac Surgery
and co-director of the U-M Cardiovascular Center
The Health System hopes
in the future to sponsor similar seminars highlighting other topics,
in other locations. We urge you to stay tuned to future issues of MPulse for
information about seminars in your area.

Dinner Celebrates New Holland Scholarship
On May 1, Jean Holland (M.D. 1977) hosted a scholarship
dinner at her Birmingham, Michigan, home to celebrate the new
Frederick Richard Holland, M.D., Endowed Medical Scholarship. Holland,
along with her children, established the scholarship in memory of her
late husband, and in honor of the couple’s desire to help future
generations of medical students. The event provided a wonderful opportunity
for Medical School alumni from throughout the Detroit area to spend
time together, and to visit with Interim Dean James O. Woolliscroft,
M.D.
The Medical School, in conjunction with MCAS, routinely organizes
such dinners to provide our alumni with a chance to connect with others
in their areas, as well as with the dean. In addition to dinner, guests
have an opportunity to learn more about the latest Medical School developments,
as well as about the ongoing need for additional scholarship funds
to support our talented and hard-working medical students.
If you would
like to learn more about how you can help support medical student scholarships,
please contact Director of Alumni and Donor Relations B.J.

Support the Future of Medicine by Sponsoring a
White Coat
Each year, approximately 170 outstanding scholars have the honor of
joining one of the most prestigious medical institutions in the country
when they are formally welcomed as the U-M’s newest class of
medical students at the White Coat Ceremony.
During the ceremony, sponsored
by MCAS, our new medical students gather in the presence of their families,
guests, faculty members and leaders of the Medical School to formally
receive the cloak of their future profession — the white
coat. This event marks a milestone in the education of a medical student — entry
into clinical medicine.
Many of the white coats presented at the ceremony are supported by
our generous and dedicated alumni. Click on the link below to find
out how you can support the future of medicine by sponsoring
a white coat.

Support for Student Scholarships: Lifting the Burden … Realizing
the Dream
Through support for student scholarships, our generous alumni are
increasingly making the difference for medical students choosing between
attending the U-M or another institution. For some, it makes the difference
between earning a medical degree and pursuing another career altogether.
Scholarship support from generous benefactors helps guarantee access
to a future in medicine for our talented and hard-working scholars.
