Each year, approximately 170 outstanding scholars have the honor of joining
one of the most prestigious medical institutions in the country when they are
formally welcomed as the U-M’s newest class of medical students at the White Coat Ceremony.
This year’s event
was another tremendous success, as the Medical School’s newest entering class
was welcomed into the family of medicine at Michigan. Many of the white coats
presented at the ceremony are sponsored by generous and dedicated alumni. Click HERE to find out how you can help support the future of medicine by sponsoring a white coat.
HOST Program: Help Our Students Travel
Interview activity for fourth-year students takes place across the country
starting this month! The HOST Program,
coordinated by the University of Michigan Medical Center Alumni Society, matches
fourth-year students with alumni-volunteers during the residency interview
process. As an alumni volunteer during the interview process, you will provide
your students with a free place to stay, as well as advice based on personal
experience about residency training and the medical center and community in
which they are interviewing. In addition to what you will offer as a volunteer
alumni host, this program promises you much in return. You also will learn
firsthand about the U-M Medical School today, the new curriculum, and changes
on campus. Volunteers are especially needed in the following cities: Boston,
Cleveland, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Raleigh-Durham and San Francisco/Palo Alto.
If you have participated in the HOST program in the past, we encourage you
to check/update
your information.
If you would like to be a new host, please visit HOST
Registration. For additional information, please contact HOST Program Manager
Mary Morency at (734) 998-7584 or marymore@umich.edu.
Second Annual Fantasy Football Experience Benefits Prostate Cancer

Fantasy Football Experience, a two-day event championed by Michigan
Football Coach Lloyd Carr to benefit the “Men of Michigan” Prostate
Cancer Research Fund, took place Aug. 2-3. The goal of this annual
event is to advance awareness, research and treatment related to prostate
cancer,
while giving participants a truly unique insider’s perspective
on Michigan Wolverine Football.

Ways of Giving: Three Great Opportunities to Maximize Your Medical School Gift
Maintaining and enhancing the quality of our Medical School depends upon our
ability to recruit the very best medical students, and to provide them with
the finest training. Support from generous benefactors that fosters the very
best in medical research and education is playing an increasingly crucial role
in making that possible.
Right now, the U-M Medical School is highlighting three outstanding giving
opportunities, including:
President’s Scholarship Challenge: To encourage additional
support for graduate/professional scholarships — including Medical School scholarships
— University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman recently committed
$20 million to provide a 1-to-2 match for all new scholarship gifts made between
September 1, 2007, and December 31, 2008 (or until matching funds are depleted).
For more information, visit Ways of Giving.
IRA Charitable Rollover for 2007: Until December 31, 2007,
alumni/ae who are preparing to withdraw their 2007 Minimum Required Distribution,
and also would like to support the U-M Medical School, can realize additional
benefits by making a gift of their IRA withdrawals to the U-M. For more information,
visit our Charitable IRA Rollovers Web page.
Michigan Endowment Return Strategy: The U-M has received special
permission from the Internal Revenue Service to invest charitable remainder trust
assets alongside its endowment funds within its highly diversified, long-term
portfolio. This new program will provide Medical School benefactors an opportunity
to increase the power of their philanthropy, while enhancing personal returns
from their planned gifts. For more information, visit the U-M Office of Planned
Giving Michigan Endowment Return Strategy Web page.
