The Medical Center Alumni Society – MCAS – wants to take this opportunity to enthusiastically welcome you to our outstanding Health System! The teaching staff, facilities and fellow students all combine to create an energy that will soon help you see why the University of Michigan consistently ranks among the top in the country. An important partner in this vision is the Medical Center Alumni Society. HOST Program: Help Our Students Travel
Interview activity for M4 students takes place across the country starting next month! The HOST Program, coordinated by MCAS, the University of Michigan Medical Center Alumni Society, matches M4 students with alumni volunteers during the M4 residency interview process. You, as alumni, are encouraged to be active participants in the program and Help Our Students Travel. As a volunteer, you will provide a student or students with a free place to stay, as well as advice based on your experience about residency training and the medical center and community in your area. Also, you will have the opportunity to renew your personal sense of pride in the U-M Medical School as reflected in these exceptional students who have met the challenges of this highly demanding medical program.
We have updated and changed the program, so even if you have registered in the past, we encourage you to register again. If you think that you would like to be a host, please click the following HOST Registration or you may contact HOST Program Manager Theresa Finney Dumais, at (734) 998-7584, or e-mail her at dumaist@umich.edu

Esteemed Teacher and Researcher Horace W. Davenport Dies
Horace Davenport, Ph.D., professor emeritus of physiology in the University of Michigan Medical School, died of complications of pneumonia August 29 in Ann Arbor. He was 92. A widely admired teacher, Davenport was an active member of the faculty at Michigan from 1956-78. Davenport gained international recognition for his work that led to a greater understanding of the gastric mucosal barrier which prevents the stomach from injuring or digesting itself. “Many successful therapies for peptic ulcer disease are based on Dr. Davenport’s work,” notes Howard Markel, the George E. Wantz Professor of the History of Medicine. Fondly remembered by generations of graduate students, Dr. Davenport was often associated by many of them with his favorite quote: “Chance favors the prepared mind.”
Consider a Named Four-Year Scholarship
A scholarship gift is a wonderful way of extending a hand to our extraordinary students and relieving some of the burden of their educational expenses. A scholarship gift provides a meaningful way to have your name, or that of another family member, friend, or former teacher or mentor, associated with the University of Michigan Medical School.
Funding a named $20,000 scholarship for four years in a row allows you to provide a student with the assurance of receiving at least $5,000 per year in scholarship support each year he or she is enrolled in the Medical School. As with the one-year scholarship gift, the student receiving support from you will know who you are and will establish a benefactor-student dialogue if you so desire.
For information on scholarship support, contact Director of Alumni Relations B. J. Bess, at (734)998-6044, or e-mail her at bjbess@umich.edu
