MCAS Distinguished Alumni & Student Awards

The University of Michigan Medical Center Alumni Society (MCAS) annually bestows awards on alumni/ae and students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their careers or in their studies. MCAS presents these awards during the fall Medical School Reunion Weekend at its annual Awards Lunch. They will present student awards at their graduation luncheon in June. We invite you to CLICK HERE to learn more about these awards and how to nominate a physician or student that you think deserves to be honored by the Medical Center Alumni Society.

Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center

The Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center (MCDC) is a new entity that will serve as an umbrella for all of our efforts to understand, prevent and better control diabetes and its complications. The U-M Health System is already a national leader in diabetes research, patient care and education. A $44 million gift from Michigan alumnus Bill Brehm and his wife, Dee, last fall will jump start our efforts to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

The new Brehm Center for Type 1 Diabetes Research and Analysis will join the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Center, Animal Models for Diabetes Complications Consortium, and the new Metabolomics and Obesity Center to jointly form the MCDC.

Michigan is known for its spirit of faculty collaboration, and bringing our extensive diabetes community together under the framework of the MCDC will further enhance our efforts to combat this disease. We look forward to watching this Center develop.

Ways of Giving: Spotlight on Scholarship

Elise Georgi (M.D. 2002) received full scholarship support from Medical School alumnus Jim Hays (M.D. 1977) during her four years in medical school at the University of Michigan. Elise went on to be a resident in Family Medicine at the Chelsea (MI) Community Hospital, and is now a Community Health Fellow with the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University.

“It's so hard,” Elise noted when she was finishing medical school. “You’re dedicating all of yourself to studying and to trying to learn how to be a doctor. Having that safety and security of scholarship support … it’s really hard to emphasize how important it is unless you had a moment where you felt a little unsafe financially.  The burden it lifts – that I don’t have $200,000 in loans, with loan payments of $1,500 a month – right now I really feel that! It was really important in medical school just to be able to study and get through and just learn how to be a doctor.”
