A Message from the Dean

Allen S. LichterOne of the perks of my position as dean of the University of Michigan Medical School is hearing first hand the heartfelt “thank yous” that come from the students who have benefited from alumni scholarship gifts. An example: “Because of my scholarship, I am today bound only by my own imagination and aptitude. You alleviated a financial burden for both myself and my family, and helped me to see that I have now a seemingly limitless array of career possibilities….” This quote precisely captures the goal of scholarship support, to allow our students, who are all among the most promising medical students in the nation, to be as good as they can be, uncompromised by debt, the worries that accompany debt, and the strategies - like outside jobs and the selection of particular specialties - that are employed to reduce debt.

Many of you are familiar with our opportunities for named scholarship gifts: the $5,000 one-year gift, the $20,000 four-year gift, the $100,000 permanently endowed scholarship fund. All of these named gifts offer the rewarding opportunity to get to know “your” student and to be engaged in the life of the University of Michigan Medical School today. I also know that you may only have the capacity at this time to make a gift of $10 or $100 or $500. Know that gifts of every amount are crucial in providing our students with the tuition assistance they need and signifying to them your interest in their success.

If you have made scholarship gifts in the past, I urge you to continue to do so. If you have not yet made a scholarship gift to support medical students at Michigan, I hope you will consider making a gift now. In addition to changing one student’s life, your gift is a worthy investment in the future of this great medical school of which we are all a part and in the future of medicine in America.

Please join me in making a scholarship gift this year. If you would like details on any of the named gifts, or more information about how your scholarship dollars will be used, please call B.J. Bess at (734) 998-6044 or e-mail her at bjbess@umich.edu. She will be glad to speak with you. Or feel free to send your scholarship donation today to B.J. Bess, ATTN: Scholarship, 301 East Liberty Street, Suite 400, Ann Arbor, MI, 48103.

Sincerely,

Allen S. Lichter, M.D.
Dean, U-M Medical School
Newman Family Professor of Radiation Oncology
