LAST CHANCE! Provide a White Coat Welcome to a Member of the Class of 2010

This is your last chance to be a part of the White Coat Ceremony by providing a student’s white coat for a gift of $100. A recognition card will provide each student with the name of the alumnus who provided their coat. We invite you to join these students as they embark on their medical school adventure, and as alumni, welcome them warmly as they become part of the proud legacy that is medicine at Michigan. Support a student and sponsor a white coat!

If you would like to sponsor a white coat, click here. Print the form, fill it out completely, and mail it with your check or credit card information to University of Michigan, Medical Development and Alumni Relations, attn: White Coat, 301 E. Liberty, Suite 400, Ann Arbor, MI 48104-2251. If you have any questions, please contact Theresa Finney Dumais

MCAS Student Scholarship Award Winners Announced

The Alumni Society presents three student awards annually - one to a second-year student, one to a third-year student and one to a graduating student - who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their careers or in their studies. MCAS presents these awards during the annual Senior Awards Lunch. This year’s Lunch took place on Thursday, June 1, 2006, in the Michigan Union Ballroom.

The MCAS Scholarship Service Awards are presented to one second-year and one third-year medical student. All students in their sophomore and junior years of Medical School at the University of Michigan are eligible for the awards. Award applications are submitted by faculty, staff or colleagues who see students as particularly deserving. The winners are chosen by a panel of MCAS Board members. The awards consist of a certificate of merit and $2,000. This year’s M2 winner is Bina Valsangkar, and the M3 winner is Jeffrey Huo. If you would like to learn more about the Student Service Scholarship Awards, please click here.

The MCAS Academic Achievement Award is presented to the graduating senior who has achieved the highest academic standing in his or her class. The award, which consists of a certificate of merit and $3,000, is presented at the graduation luncheon in June. This year’s winner of the Academic Achievement Award was Adam Possner. Adam is currently beginning his residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins/Bayview.

Congratulations to all of our award winners. To learn more about the MCAS Student Awards and how to nominate a student, please click here, or contact Julie Antis at (734) 998-7703 or antisj@umich.edu.

Hall of Honor 2006

The MCAS Hall of Honor induction ceremony was held March 16, 2006. Thirty of Michigan’s most distinguished medical professionals were inducted into the Hall of Honor. Dean Allen Lichter remarked on the accomplishments of each honoree and presented each with an award commemorating their induction.

This year’s list of inductees includes the Medical School’s first female faculty member, a former dean and three Nobel Prize winners. For more information on the Hall of Honor and to view a list of inductees, please click here.

Nominations are being accepted for the next Hall of Honor induction in 2010. Click here for information regarding the nomination process. Please contact Julie Antis at (734) 998-7703 or antisj@umich.edu for further information.

Eight minutes times two of great medical research at Michigan….watch it and be proud!

Two films, each eight minutes long, were recently produced by our office to showcase examples of the great research – both basic and clinical – taking place here at Michigan.

The first film, Seeking the Beautiful Solution, focuses on the work of stem cell researcher Sean Morrison and members of his team. The film recently won a coveted gold award (the only gold among 42 entries in the category) in the nationwide 2006 competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

The other film, Saving Another Life, tells the story of surgeon Bob Bartlett’s more than 30 years of work perfecting ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), the long-term heart-lung support that has saved the lives of more than 30,000 babies and is now used on individuals of all ages. The film received a bronze (second prize) in this year’s Telly Awards. Bartlett, now retired from surgery, and his colleagues are hard at work on artificial organ research and the development of a non-thrombogenic surface to address clotting challenges that are so critical in artificial organ support.

Both films, with accompanying additional conversations, can be viewed by clicking here.

If you would like DVD copies, please call Denise Harrington at (734) 998-7705 or e-mail her at deniseh@umich.edu.
