HOST Program: Help Our Students Travel
Interview activity for M4 students takes place across the country starting this month! The HOST Program, coordinated by MCAS, the University of Michigan Medical Center Alumni Society, matches M4 students with alumni volunteers during the M4 residency interview process. You, as alumni, are encouraged to be active participants in the program and Help Our Students Travel. As a volunteer, you will provide a student or students with a free place to stay, as well as advice based on your experience about residency training and the medical center and community in your area. Also, you will have the opportunity to renew your personal sense of pride in the U-M Medical School as reflected in these exceptional students who have met the challenges of this highly demanding medical program. Volunteers are especially needed in the following cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, and New York.
We have updated and changed the program this year, so even if you have registered in the past, we encourage you to check/update your information. If you think that you would like to be a host, please visit HOST Registration. Interim Dean
James O. Woolliscroft |
Medical School Dean Allen S. Lichter, M.D., stepped down from his post July 31 and will leave the U-M faculty Sept. 30 to become executive vice-president and chief executive officer of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), based in Alexandria, Va. Lichter, the Newman Family Professor of Radiation Oncology, served as dean of the Medical School since May 1, 1999, after serving as interim dean from December 1998.
“Serving as dean of this outstanding Medical School for the past seven and a half years has been the most exciting and rewarding experience of my career,” Lichter says. “Yet directing ASCO represents an exciting new challenge for me, one that I am eager to undertake. It takes me back to my roots in oncology, while offering the prospect of fresh opportunities and issues to tackle.”
A U-M Health System (UMHS) press release announcing Dr. Lichter’s plan gives further detail.
Shortly after Dr. Lichter announced he was leaving the U-M, President Mary Sue Coleman, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Teresa Sullivan, and Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and UMHS CEO Robert P. Kelch, M.D., appointed Medical School Executive Associate Dean James O. Woolliscroft, M.D., as interim dean, effective Aug. 1. His appointment will remain in effect until a permanent dean has been appointed following a national search.
“Dr. Woolliscroft brings tremendous breadth and depth of experience in academic medicine to this role. Through his highly capable leadership, the Medical School will be in good hands during this transition period,” says Kelch of the interim dean, who also is the Lyle C. Roll Professor of Medicine.

This year’s tenth annual White Coat Ceremony, sponsored by MCAS, took place on Sunday, August 7, 2006 at Rackham Auditorium, kicking off a week long orientation for the incoming, first-year students. Each year, this event marks entry into clinical medicine, a milestone in the education of medical students all over the globe. All 170 members of the entering class were presented with their first white lab coats by Interim Dean Woolliscroft, an Arnold Gold Foundation pin by Dr. James E. Wasco, President of MCAS, and a stethoscope by Dr. David A. Bloom, Associate Dean for Faculty, on behalf of the Cardiology Department. By continuing this tradition in the presence of family, friends, faculty and alumni, MCAS continues to support the significance of the doctor-patient relationship. To support incoming M1 Students or for further information on the White Coat Ceremony, please contact Theresa Finney Dumais at (734) 998-7584 or dumaist@umich.edu

Ways of Giving: IRA Legislation Offers U-M Donors Golden Giving Opportunity
The new Pension Protection Act of 2006 provides a limited-time opportunity to make charitable contributions directly from Individual Retirement Accounts to qualified charitable organizations. Between now and Dec. 31, 2007, you may take advantage of this unique opportunity to support the University of Michigan Medical School scholarship program.
- Individuals 70 ½ and older may transfer up to $100,000 per year directly from an IRA to a qualified charity;
- Because a qualified charitable contribution generates neither taxable income nor an itemized tax deduction, even non-itemizers can benefit;
- The charitable distribution may be applied toward your Required Minimum Distribution;
- Even if you plan other charitable gifts that will fully utilize your allowable federal income tax charitable deduction (50 percent of your adjusted gross income for cash gifts to public charities), you can take advantage of this new legislation.
