Ensuring the health and well-being of our children

“Clinical research in children represents a special challenge to investigators because there are added complexities in working with the young. It’s important we not take for granted what is known about adults, since it’s not always applicable to children, who grow and change rapidly. Every day we make progress in understanding endocrine diseases in pediatrics. A century ago, diabetes was a death sentence for children. Today, they live normal lives.”

Children have their whole lives ahead of them and Josephine Kasa-Vubu’s work in both research and practice as a specialist in pediatric endocrinology helps them embrace this future. A former scholar in the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health Program supported by the National Institutes of Health, Kasa-Vubu focuses her clinical and research efforts on diabetes and obesity, as the number of adolescent girls affected by these conditions is increasing at an alarming rate.
