JAMA featuring the Sesquicentennial Celebration

JAMAWhen the University of Michigan Medical School opened its doors 150 years ago, surgeons used saws as their primary instrument and medical students didn't need high school diplomas. Today, the School is one of the top ten in the nation, a leader in education, research and patient care. The Journal of the American Medical Association honored the Medical School's 150 year history on February 16 with a special all-Michigan issue that spotlights current research at the UM and salutes the school's major influence on medical education and scientific discovery. The Medical School began its tradition of innovation by establishing the nation's first university-owned hospital, expanding its curriculum to give students hands-on training, accepting women and minorities decades before other comparable schools did and challenging students to be active participants in their education. The Sesquicentennial Celebration concludes with a finale weekend celebration in Ann Arbor, October 13-14, 2000.
