A New Edition to Celebrate the Sesquicentennial:

Not Just Any Medical School: The Science, Practice, and Teaching of Medicine at the University of Michigan, 1850-1941
University of Michigan Press, 1999

Horace W. Davenport, the William Beaumont Professor Emeritus of Physiology and one of the Medical School's most distinguished scholars and teachers, has written a revised version of his 1986 book, Fifty Years of Medicine at the University of Michigan. The earlier book covered the period from 1891 to 1941. The new revised version, in commemoration of the Medical School's sesquicentennial celebration includes new materials and photographs that tell the story of the opening of the Medical School in 1850 and the decades that followed until the advent of World War II. The author, now 86, and a resident of Birmingham Alabama leaves the post war boom and the social transformation of American medicine, with the rise of government-funded research and medical care, to others.

The book is available through the Medical School by calling toll-free 877.392.7772
